tutorial: Alice Mitts

 This project was inspired by one of my favorite books growing up: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Perhaps these mitts are something that Alice would have worn, had she visited Wonderland in the wintertime. I’ve made the mitts very short, as that’s how I think Alice would wear them, but you can of course make them as long as you would like!

I chose to knit my hearts, because I like the different textures of the knit and crochet stitches together. If you don’t know how to knit, you can of course crochet your hearts.

you will need:

1 50g skein of bulky (5) weight yarn in grey

size 6.5 crochet hook

sock yarn scraps in shades of pink

size 2-3.5 mm knitting needles

tapestry needle to sew in ends & sew hearts onto mitts

how to make your mitts:

chain 21, join with a slip stitch for working in the round

work in US half-double crochet (hdc) for 10 rows.

Form a button hole: chain 3, hdc into the 3^rd stitch from your hook.

work one round in hdc.

work two hdc stitches into your chain 3 space, continue in hdc one more round.

cut yarn and weave tail through loop on your hook.

make a second mitt using the same pattern. weave in all ends using your tapestry needle.

how to make the hearts:

There are many ways to knit hearts but this is how I learned from my mom.

cast on 3 stitches.

row 1: (and all odd rows following) knit

row 2: kfb, knit 1, kfb (5 stitches)

row 4: kfb, knit 3, kfb (7 stitches)

row 6: kfb, knit 5, kftb (9 stitches)

continue adding 2 stitches every even row until you have 15 stitches on your needle

row 14: knit 7, k2tog, knit to end of row

row 15: (work only the first 7 stitches on your needle) k1, k2tog, k1, k2tog, k1

row 16: knit

row 17: k2tog, k1, k2tog

row 18: knit

row 19: cast off

work rows 15-19 again for 2^nd set of 7 stitches on your needle.

make a second heart for your second mitt

weave in ends and sew your hearts onto the front of your mitts in whichever direction you prefer.

Now you’re ready for a little trip to Wonderland yourself!
